Beginnings of Studio 55 by Dr. Bradley Fisher
Studio 55 Arts Guild was formed in 1997 following the first Senior Art Exhibition in 1996 organized by the Gerontology Program at Missouri State University. Dr. Bradley Fisher, the Director of the Gerontology Program and the organizer of the exhibition, was approached by Harriet Cremeen who asked him if there was some way to contact the participants of the exhibition to see if there was interest in forming an art guild. Dr. Fisher contacted all the artists and twelve showed up for a meeting in late 1996. The artists enthusiastically welcomed the idea of forming a group for those 55 and above which would offer support for members to continue pursuing artistic endeavors and opportunities for exhibiting their work. One of the main discussions was that the guild should be open to both amateurs and professionals and would eventually provide a venue for members to participate in art workshops. After meeting monthly for the next four months, Studio 55 Arts Guild was chosen as the name of the group and officers were elected. From that moment on, Dr. Fisher stepped back from a leadership role to allow the artists to guide the destiny of the organization. He continued to serve as an ex-officio member of the Arts Guild board and regularly participated in meetings for the first two years until the guild was firmly established with bylaws and a stable administrative structure. Since that time, Studio 55 has held monthly meetings, organized exhibitions of members' work, and offered presentations by artists at monthly meetings. Dr. Fisher is now retired as an Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Gerontology and still organizes the annual Senior Art Exhibition which attracts many submissions from members of Studio 55.
