Hand-Painted Ukrainian Inspired Easter Eggs
Every year I add to my collection of hand-painted Easter eggs. My motivation has always come from the Ukrainian Pysanky eggs that are part of their heritage. In their culture these eggs symbolize rebirth and the making is often a ritual that brings families together. Although I have taken my inspiration from the Ukrainian eggs, I don’t have the ability for the intricate process of batik and wax. I no longer use real eggs as I’ve found that even blown they don’t stand the test of time. I recently came across a set of a dozen white eggs at Hobby Lobby that are not the expensive wood ones or Styrofoam, which is difficult to use with markers. I’m not sure what these are made of but they are smooth and take color from my markers really well. I was able to sketch my design lightly with pencil and then add color with different types of permanent markers. These are fun to create although some turn out better than others. I now have a collection of different eggs from several years. This year when I look at my basket of decorated Easter eggs, I try to think of them as a message of hope for the bravery of the Ukrainian people.

Studio 55 Arts Guild is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting award winning sculpture artist Janet Jordan M.D. Please invite your friends!
“This talk will be more about my own personal experience with art, how it relates to all aspects of life, the commonality between artists and our value to society.” says the native of Madison County, Kansas and a graduate of the University of Kansas and the KU School of Medicine. “We can all start getting together again, but our artists hearts have grown even more sensitive. Our artist eyes may look at the world differently. Our artist hands may reflect these changes. Our camaraderie takes on a whole new level of importance.” Please Click here to read one of Janet's Poems "Grandma's Hands."
The connection between her often stressful medical practice as an emergency room physician and finding a balance to “quiet her mind,” helps her synthesize and express all that she experiences. These days you can find her at “Doc on the Rock”, her lake view studio at Table Rock Lake, filled with “dogs, flowers, guitars, and loud singer/songwriter music.” You can learn more about Janet Jordan's passion for sculpture at janetjordansculpture.com.
