Hispanic Heritage Mural for Lebanon High School
Acrylic on canvas stretched on 5 MDF panels with 1X1 foot Masonite tiles to be painted by art students and installed around the perimeter of mural.
The concept and subject matter were suggested by students and their families living here and in their countries. Some art students were invited to paint with us.
Elizabeth Barker, the high school art teacher that inspired us and her students, was the driving force in this and other projects. Eric Adams and his visual art students were responsible for making the daily videos. Eric is a fine photographer and art teacher; Elizabeth is a talented ceramist.

Program by artist Rebecca Lewis Smith
Subject: "Journey in Abstraction"
Rebecca will share ideas and examples reflecting the process and execution of abstract painting, techniques, tools, and guiding principles. Please visit Rebecca's website.
Members and guests are invited to bring 1-2 piece of their art for "show and share"
Rebecca’s experience as an artist began with a love for abstract expressionist painting, followed by an early career creating contemporary stained-glass window designs. She is well versed in oil and acrylic painting, charcoal, mixed media and pastels.
Much of what Rebecca does in the studio is deeply influenced by both modern and ancient art, and she revels at exploring any and all art museums. She is particularly fond of abstract expressionism and expressionism in general for the way the styles communicate the individuality and spirit of the artist.
The artist holds a BFA degree in painting and drawing and an MS in education and has taught both art and gifted education in Missouri. She is a Freeman Foundation Scholar participating in study abroad in both China and Japan. Her most recent studies were with Cold Wax Academy in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She is a juried artist member of Best of Missouri Hands and an artist member of Fresh Gallery.

“If you can draw it, you can paint it.” That’s what my art instructor told me when I expressed my insecurity about doing my first color painting. Looking back, I can see how right she was. Draftsmanship and its principles are so much a part of color work. I find it profitable to engage in drawing on a regular basis. Drawing requires less time than color work, yet you get all the benefits of practicing composition, value, shape, mass, space, texture, line, etc. Here is a recent charcoal study I did of a friend

Winter Bouquets: Feathers, Leaves and Sticks:
During the barren winter months in Missouri one of the things I miss most are floral bouquets. However, I’ve found an abundance of lovely things in the yard and surrounding areas to satisfy my obsession. I get great pleasure using feathers, painted leaves and sticks to make up for the lack of flowers in the cold season. Coupled with a few dried grasses and arranged in a container, these items make lovely table decor. Hopefully these photos will inspire you to also hunt and gather.
I am a self-taught artist, a former teacher and professional grant writer. I began my art career after retiring in 2006.
I have a great art studio in my home in Springfield, Missouri. I continue to learn through videos, books and following my favorite artists on social media, blogs, and Pinterest. I embrace my life with gratitude and aspire to keep growing as a person and as an artist.

"A few months ago, I set another courageously ambitious goal for myself: to become a TEDx speaker. TEDx is a highly selective, prestigious event that is challenging enough for native speakers, but for me it felt like the scariest challenge. After some hard work, I am thrilled to report that I got chosen to speak at TEDx in Seattle this April. I will speak about my journey as a physician-artist and the legacy I want to leave for everyone who dares to dream big. I will also share many of my artwork with the global audience when my TEDx gets published on YouTube after the event. "
